Newburgh Waterfront Project Gets First Key Funding

NEWBURGH, N.Y. (July 1 , 2008) - $1.25 million in state funding is in City of Newburgh hands, for initial work that would eventually lead to a major waterfront revitalization project.

The funding was announced on a sunny Monday afternoon, on the large green tract rising up over the current waterfront and Hudson River. That included a presentation of a ceremonial $750,000 check from State Senator William Larkin. That money will fund a study of storm and sanitary sewer needs for the proposed LeylandAlliance waterfront concept, which includes a large-scale residential, retail, commercial and mixed-use project spanning the waterfront and extending up to the historic area. Also part of the mix is the planned new campus for Orange County Community College.

Larkin says the funding was a joint venture between him and Secretary of State Lorraine Cortes-Vazquez, who was also on hand.

“They had asked me to secure $750,000. The Secretary of State under the guidance and all from Alison Lee of Pat Lynch, Associates, proved that this was a viable project. The city has shown us that they are a joint venture with Leyland, to do this.”

The New York Department of State is putting up $500,000.

Mayor Nicholas Valentine said the overall project continues the city’s quest to make Newburgh an all-embracing city.

“All parts of our city need everybody living in them. It was that way when I grew up here and it should be that way forever.”

City Manager Jean McGrane said this is as much an attempt to restore the glory of Newburgh as it is to reinvent the city.

“If you recall, if you knew Newburgh, this whole area was filled with homes and businesses so this in a way is rebuilding Newburgh. It will be new but it will also have its roots in history.”
